Building and Planning
What is a Listed Building?
Some buildings are listed because they are considered to be of special architectural or historical interest and so require special protection - protects both the inside and outside of a building and can affect the buildings around it – all intact buildings built prior to 1700 and most buildings built between 1700 and 1840 – buildings less than 30 years old are usually only listed if they are of particular historical interest
Buildings are categorised into three grades: Grade I; Grade II* and Grade II – most listed buildings are in the Grade II category
Owners of listed buildings have a legal duty to ensure that the property is maintained in a reasonable state – you don’t need to improve the property, just need to make sure it doesn’t get any worse
If they want to do any work to the building they may well need listed building consent
