What is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?

What is a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)?

Order made to protect a tree.  It makes it an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or destroy any tree that is subject to a TPO within the local authority’s consent.  It can cover all types of tree – should be revealed in your Local Search - serious fines are levied in the event that a tree preservation order is breached.  You can carry out works to a tree that is protected but you must always write to the council telling them which tree the work will affect, what type of work is being carried out and why it is necessary – remember that most trees in a Conservation Area are protected as if they were subject to a TPO.
