What is a disbursement?

A disbursement is the name conveyancers use for costs that they have to pay on your behalf. An example of a disbursement would be any Land Registry fees paid on your behalf - while you have paid this money to your solicitor they have had to pay out exactly the same amount to another party.

This is different to any costs that you have to pay to your conveyancer, for example their fees. This is a charge that they make for their time and for providing their professional services to you.

The reason that the costs are divided into these two categories is to comply with Law Society regulations. It helps clients to understand exactly what their conveyancer is charging them for and what costs they pay out to other parties. This helps them to understand the true cost of a transaction.
