Hanover
The Hanover area is a bright and vibrant district of Brighton that is made up of rows of Victorian cottages running up the side of an extremely steep hill. Its borders are generally considered to run from the Level at the bottom of the hill up to Queen’s park road at the top and from Elm grove to its north to Sussex street in the south.
The area has become gentrified over the last 20 years and has seen the largely working class population dwindle to be replaced by a large commuter and student quota. Brighton University halls of residence are at the bottom of Southover street and the area is 15 mins from Brighton train station, which in part has fed this shift.
There is a great sense of community in the area possibly due to the high level of home ownership/occupancy. The small Victorian cottages do not lend themselves to being sliced up into smaller flats.
The area is renowned for its small friendly pubs that ooze with character, although some interiors have sadly been renovated in recent years they have kept their charm to a large extent. The area also has possibly the best organic butcher to be found anywhere in Brighton and Hove.
In September The Hanover Community Association run a Beer festival and “Hanover Day” festival in July, both of which have been very successful and are known throughout the City.
If you can handle the hill, which is no mean feat, then Hanover offers a wonderful place to locate to. Convenient for the the town centre yet far enough away to retain its quirky individuality Hanover’s multicoloured streets offer the best of both worlds.
