Chill out and save on fuel

At the risk of sounding smug, I am pleased to report that my fuel bills are going down this year. And it's not just because I have cleverly switched utility companies - quite the opposite. For my electricity I am with Good Energy, a 100 per cent "green" supplier and one of the more expensive.

My fuel bills have come down because the family is using less energy to heat and light our home and run our domestic appliances. And no, we haven't moved into an eco pod. Nor do we creep around in the cold and dark, or force the children to do their homework by candlelight.

We haven't had to make "sacrifices": a lot has been so minor that we barely notice it - training the children to turn off their lights, for instance.

By making small changes and improvements to our standard 1920s suburban house, we are saving £46 a month, an annual sum of £552. In addition, we ran up so much credit on our gas bill that our supplier, Southern Electric, refunded us £300 just before Christmas, making overall energy savings for the year of more than £800.
