Halifax has claimed that the recent Stamp Duty holiday, due to end in December, has benefited 31% of homebuyers. The holiday was for homes worth up to £175,000 in England and Wales.
Although the concession has failed to kick start the market, as intended, many homebuyers saved in the region of £1750 on their purchases. This has mostly benefited FTBs, where around 83% completely avoided stamp duty.
There were still 50% less transactions in September and June 08/09 than on the previous period. Only 366,000 sales have been recorded coming into 09.
Martin Ellis, Halifax housing economist, said; “This is boost to many people in a very difficult economic climate”. |
