Trump bucks trend
It is a number sure to bring cheer to the average real estate mogul in these trying times. Waxen-haired serial sacker and noted golfer Donald Trump did what he reportedly does best this week, closing the deal on the sale of his Florida beachfront mansion for a record sum.
Maison de l'Amitié, a modest 5,600 sq metre (60,000 sq ft) property in Palm Beach spread over several buildings, sold for a reported $95m on Tuesday, making it the most expensive residential sale ever recorded in the US, according to Trump's spokesperson. There was no way to verify the claim.
The magnate was overjoyed, both for himself and for humanity.
"I love breaking records," he told reporters, "and this is a record. In an age of so many people getting hurt in real estate, it shows that you can still do well in real estate. I think it's a great sign for the area, a great sign for Palm Beach and all that Palm Beach represents."
The mansion, at 515 North County Road, features an array of trademark Trump features: a mammoth fountain greets guests at the front, a circular gallery boasts a series of trompe l'oeil reproductions of famous paintings, white marble columns and formal gardens abound, and the bathrooms are graced with 24-carat gold fixtures.
